An evidence-based elementary school in southern New Hampshire
Millyard School is a small private school for children ages 6–10 (roughly grades 1–5). We teach directly, expect mastery, and measure progress honestly — and we publish the evidence behind every major design choice. We are now forming our founding class of 10–20 students.
Why this school
Built from the evidence, not the fashion
Education research is unusually clear about what works: teach new material explicitly, practice it until it sticks, and don't move on until it has. Most schools don't run that way. This one does.
Before opening, we read and graded the research — over a thousand papers, each judged against a public rubric — and built the school on what survived. The whole evidence base is published at kb.millyardschool.com, including where the evidence is thin. You can check our work.
How we teach
Four commitments
Explicit instruction
New material is taught directly and checked immediately — not left for children to discover by chance.
Mastery learning
Children advance when they can demonstrate mastery, not when the calendar says so. Gaps get closed before they compound.
Retrieval and spaced practice
What is learned is practiced, spaced out over time, and revisited until it stays.
A teacher, not just software
Adaptive software delivers practice at each child's exact level; a teacher leads instruction, discussion, and small-group work.
Measured progress
You will know how your child is doing
Every student takes MAP Growth, a national norm-referenced assessment, three times a year — fall, winter, and spring. Between tests, mastery tracking shows exactly what each child has learned and what comes next, and you get written progress reports. No mystery, no end-of-year surprise.
Affordability
EFA funds apply
New Hampshire's Education Freedom Account program can direct roughly $4,300–$5,000 per student per year toward tuition. Funding is limited statewide and awarded as applications are approved, so it pays to apply early — we can walk you through it. More on enrollment and EFAs
